Spiritual fitness or fitness of the spirit relate to how we cope with everyday stress and strains of daily living. When difficulties arise, and pressure builds up, we find ourselves overwhelmed and if we neglect to give the necessary attention to our spirit, our soul through self enrichment, we would not be able to function properly.
These days, such things as anxiety attacks give evidence to the inability to function properly. This attack can be anywhere from very mild to so severe. What happens when someone has this anxiety attacks is that the system experiences a state of shock. Some refer to this as “soul shock” as there is fundamentally nothing wrong with both the body and the mental state to be the cause of the experience, but it would simply be the case akin to the spirit or the soul having lost control.

The loss of such control may be momentary, but in some instances it lasts several years. Perhaps the most devastating result of such experience is the helplessness to function even the most basic and usual routines.
Having had these panic attacks, there is no doubt in my mind of this reality. It is a horrible thing to have to go through and it only adds to the panic. You feel you have lost total control over your ability to function; it’s like a total system shutdown only you are not asleep.
The hectic and frantic pace of life in this day and age all the more gives us reason to give our soul, our inner voice, our spirit the opportunity to experience self enrichment, to rest, to have the chance to be heard. When we multi-task and have scheduled things till late at night, neglecting to provide downtime for to give attention to our mind and spirit, we lose the opportunity to connect with ourselves. It becomes impossible to listen and get to know our inner needs if we are watching television, talking on the phone or even chatting in the internet. We simply must give time out for self enrichment activities.
Just as this information age has made everyone productive even beyond the usual office hours, it has also given rise to opportunities for more productive activities during anticipated downtimes. There are numerous audio, video right down to massage clinics that gives us the chance to slow down, connect with the inner self, and enrich our minds with relaxing and uplifting thoughts. We have so much help available to us today that there ever was a few decades ago. The biggest hurdle that remains is our lack of concern, devotion and discipline to attend to our personal spiritual health and well being. We just take it for granted that our mind, body and even spirit will function with a few cups of coffee and a heavy dinner. Just as a car need maintenance to perform efficiently for us, our body and spirit and the entire aspects that make up our whole body also need nourishment and attention. Yes, even in this computer age.
Faithful and resolute effort, devotion and discipline in the care of our mind, body and soul results to fitness. The fitness of our soul or spirit has bearing and has significant effect on the rest of the body parts and functioning. We just need to realize that we need to include in our daily list of things to do adequate time for self enrichment. These small periods of downtime sharpens and hones our saw for the work that awaits the next day.
